Medical aids offer 2 ways for you to fund your out-of-hospital expenses like doctors' visits, eye care, dentistry, and prescribed medication.1. Traditional Set benefits.
You have pre-defined amounts for different treatments, which are not interchangeable.
Benefits do not roll over to the next year - these are a "use it, or lose it" type benefit.
2. Savings fund.
You are allocated a set amount of funds from which you pay costs.
You can spend the funds as you wish.
Any balances roll over to the following year.
Here is the problem ...
1/12 of the savings fund is automatically added to your premium as a repayment of that amount over a year - whether you spend the savings or not!
This is really like a forced loan.
Fedhealth don't do this, enabling you to control how you use your savings. And that puts Fedhealth in a league of their own!
How the savings work ...
With both options, once the benefits or funds are spent and depending upon your plan, you may have access to a safety net (Threshold Benefit) where ,once expenses add up to a pre-determined amount, the scheme pay certain further costs for that year.
The scheme pays for treatments like trauma casualty, 7 days of take-home medicine, 30-days post hospital, specialised radiography (MRI/CT scans), female contraceptives and you can upgrade to a higher option with more comprehensive benefits anytime of the year.
They offer a safety net should you spend your savings you have access to unlimited listed GP visits and basic dentistry, paid by the scheme.
There are child rates for financially dependent children up to age 27, and you only pay for three children.
Preventative screenings and healthcare assessments like lifestyle screenings, wellness screenings (includes finger prick glucose and cholesterol, blood pressure, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) and physical screenings are covered from this benefit.
